Meritocracy in Brazil

The Meritocracy was introduced in Brazil by the State, the emergence of public procurement to fill vacancies in the public spheres. The aim was to combat the heredity of positions and nepotism, giving precedence attributes and skills that were not related to the influences of power or exchange of favors and blood relations. With the emergence of this new management sistem, it was thought that companies could focus more on the merits of a person than their family and political origins.

Where meritocracy is more used

Initially, meritocracy was used in public administration, but due to the increase of vacancies in private organizations, meritocracy ended up being a way for these companies to adopt valuation criteria of their employees. With this in mind, companies had abandoned the outdated bureaucratic system.

Meritocracy is opposed to other types of value systems, for example, plutocracy (possession of wealth), aristocracy (hereditary nobility), nepotism (family origin), oligarchy (owned land) and democracy (popularity).

Forms and meritocratic models

There are several shapes and designs merit. We will mention some types:

  • Absolute Meritocracy: In this approach, the meritocratic competition replaces democratic elections completely. The participants cast their nominations to parliament, and given a number of local leaders out of opponents, therefore, will be done automatically parliament. First, then, becomes the President of meritocracy. The newly chosen parliament is given time to discuss and discover their own political views, which he is free to govern the state. This approach is quite radical.
  • Electoral meritocracy: In this approach, the places achieved in meritocratic competition, determine the “weight”s of citizens in the next elections. The elections themselves are the most democratic of all aspects.

Tips about the meritocratic Processes

  • To distribute goals, it’s very important to be organized in order to achieve the company’s goals and EBITDA margin (Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation and Amortization) set out earlier this year.
  • Split the budget between the departments, so that all may gain the same amount of wages.
  • Validate if the area met its financial targets of budget and investments.
  • Calculate how much each person will receive through a factor obtained by multiplying the employee’s salary, the position’s factor multiplier, of the worked days in the previous year and the performance evaluation note.
